Progress. It’s all about progress. After my first run yesterday I realised how hard training was going to be. I knew it would be, but my mind is so much stronger than my body and I felt like my mind was running away and letting my body drag behind.

This morning I decided to do the housework after breakfast and then go for a morning run, before the heat set in. I planned out my route and thought about the terrain and what distance I thought it might be. Last night I had set up a new playlist that I thought might help me through. So I went for it, out and running from the door step.

Yesterday’s run showed me that I don’t know how to breathe – I had a terrible burning in my chest and wondered if I was totally unfit or if I was asthmatic or something. After googling it, it turned out I just didn’t know how to breathe from my stomach instead of my chest. As a singer this surprised me. I can sing from my diaphragm but apparently can’t breathe from there! There were a couple of occasions where I put my hand onto my stomach to make sure I could feel it going in and out and reassure myself I was breathing right. I only stopped twice – once as I started to feel a stitch and the second time was directly after running up a hill – the only hill on my route and not a very steep one. It turned out that my run is exactly a mile if I run past my house by one house and then back 😀

I felt really good after the run. I didn’t feel light-headed or sick and my legs felt good. I really like the route I chose and I’m going to carry on with it until it feels easier. There’s a tiny bit more of the estate that I could run too, if I start to feel adventurous.

So I feel like I can really do this, I just don’t want to over do it. I’m out tomorrow but wondering whether I should wake up early and go for a run before I go out. Let’s see!

At the end of June is the Cancer Research Race For Life in my area. Once I’m back at work I’m going to check timetables and see whether I can sign up for it. I have a friend who is willing to run it with me too, so who knows, by the end of June I may have done my first 5k! I’d love to try 🙂

Also exciting is that in the coming weeks I will have some great products to review for you guys. Mostly food and drink, but all with an ethical and health conscious approach. So don’t worry this isn’t going to turn into an all running blog – there’s going to be plenty of food, drink, books and thoughts featured too! I can’t wait to share it with you all.

    1. Well I don’t know if you saw but my Nike tweet earlier was wrong and my average pace was 9’50”. Which makes me feel better because I felt like I was running too hard if I was making the other speed. I can’t wait until I’m able to run the distance that you’re doing now. So I’m trying to catch up 😀
