Why I: Got Married Young

whyi

I’ve had a few people ask in the last few months, how I met my husband. So I thought that the next post in my Why I series, could be about why I got married young.

I look younger than my actual age, and when people hear that I’ve been married for almost 11 years, they instantly ask my age.

I’m turning 34 this year and I married when I was 23. People always say that’s really young to get married, but I say if you know you want to marry someone it doesn’t really matter how old or young you are!

I met G-Man when I was 19, through a friend’s boyfriend. Our official story is that we met at Glastonbury music festival. The truth is we had met a couple of months before that, and had even had a conversation at a party but the evening wasn’t about meeting boys and so our encounter was brief.

So, when we met up at Glastonbury we were able to have proper conversations, relax and watch music together. And he stayed with me and my friend the whole time he was at the festival.

There was definite sparkage between us, and I knew I liked him. We saw each other pretty much every day from that point on. After about a month I knew this was something serious and the rest, as they say, is history!

226581_6655885726_2305_n

This was the first photo of us together, in my bright orange bedroom!

We look a little different now!

We got married in the garden of a little private manor house in Hatfield, under the roof of a mini garden pavilion, whilst our friends and families sat theatre style outside on the lawn. I walked up the aisle of lavender and it was the shortest but most-perfect ceremony. A beautiful September day, small wedding and fantastic start to our married life together.

Over the years, I’ve had friends ask me things like ‘how do you know when you’re ready to get married?’, ‘how do you know you want to marry someone?’ – and I almost always answer the clichéd ‘you just know’. And that’s because you do – you just know. As certain as you know you’re alive, you just know. And if you’re questioning it, then that’s between you and your partner to work out.

I love my marriage. We get on like a house on fire, we’re best friends and though we used to argue, we know how to argue productively now. I wouldn’t say we even do argue any more. He’s the best thing in my life, and I’m happy every single day because of him.

I don’t want this to sound soppy, but everything I’ve said is true. He’s a proper gentleman and I can’t wait to spend the rest of my days with him!

This Week I Have Been Mostly….

this week i have been mostly

Hello Spring! I think…. it’s been bitter and raining, and even though we had a glorious spring-like day last week I fear that was our lot…

But I had a busy weekend, with a family wedding on the Saturday, lots of chores Sunday and then the weekend ended with a trip to the cinema to see Beauty and The Beast.

eu_batb_flex-hero_header_r_430eac8d

And I think I’m the only person in the world not to enjoy it! We saw the film in 4DX which I usually enjoy, but this time around it seemed really unnecessary. I actually felt a little sea sick at parts. I enjoyed Emma Watson in the film, and Gaston and Le Fou were awesome, but the rest not so much. I didn’t like Emma Thompson as Mrs Potts, and I didn’t like the changes made to the original songs (time changes in Tale as Old as Time, whilst they danced) and the new songs were just major cringe. Sorry world, but I wasn’t won over.

I’ve spent a lot of time listening to Childish Gambino’s back catalogue this week. After hearing Redbone and LOVING it, and having recently completed watching Atlanta on Netflix, I have become a big fan of Donald Glover and his music is continuing to consistently impress me.

Work has been tough and intense and trying to get things wrapped up ahead of my holiday next week, I’m focussing extra extra hard on leaving things in a good way before I disappear.

I’m so excited for my trip to Rome though, and I’m really looking forward to some sunshine and a slower pace for a few days. I’m also really looking forward to taking photos whilst I’m there. If you don’t already follow my instagram, then head over, because I’ve been sharing some of my favourite photos I’ve taken over the years and it’s been a great trip down memory lane.

I’ll be posting my Favourites a few days early this month, as it’ll be scheduled whilst we’re away – and then once I’m back I’ll tell you all about my holiday! But until then, fingers crossed for some more spring-like days – come on Britain, I know you can do it!

A Beautiful Wedding

We have just returned from a lovely break in St Ives where our good friends Sarah and Nick married at Carbis Bay.

The weather for the two important wedding days was perfect just when it needed to be. We arrived in Carbis Bay on Saturday evening just in time for the sun to begin shining. All gathered together, friends and family relaxed, caught up and ate fish and chips on the beautiful beach, which looked like something from another country.

image

We even managed a dip in the sea!

The following morning was the big day and the bridesmaids showed up early to get our hair done. We had been given free rein on how to have our hair, but Sarah had said we should all have a plait somewhere. I’d seen a picture a while back of the kind of thing I wanted, and showed the hairdresser. She nailed it!

image

I was so pleased with it!

The weather had been grey and rainy, but the sun shone bright and beautiful as soon as Sarah put her dress on.

image

After a few photos it was show time. The ceremony was stunning, with the back doors to the conservatory where we were seated open, we could hear the waves from the bay below, throughout.

Photos afterwards on the grass and then the beach, along with drinks and chats. It was perfect.

We all got a little sunburnt, and I was delighted that my tinted moisturiser, which has spf, protected my nose and forehead which normally burn first. I’m planning another post describing the make up I used, soon. I was so impressed with how my face still looked perfect at the end of the day!

Wedding breakfast, coffee and then disco later we were all pretty shattered. But it was a wonderful day. The DJ agreed to play some corkers, including a Book Club only dance to Wannabe by the Spice Girls, which was definitely a highlight.

Thank you Sarah and Nick for including us in your day, allowing us to share a wonderful week with you and friends, and for asking me to be bridesmaid. The day, and week, was perfect!

Last weekend was Bank Holiday, and in true British style the Monday was grey and rainy. But thankfully I’d gotten all my good stuff done already.

Sunday was Sarah’s Hen party in London, and all us bridesmaids headed to Trafalgar square to meet with some of Sarah’s other friends and family for a day of girly fun. Donning pink feather boas, we hopped onto a London bus for some afternoon tea and sight-seeing.

Yummy cakes and sandwiches were washed down with prosecco and then tea. We then headed to Shoreditch to Mixology for fun cocktail making – and drinking!

We had great fun, and it’s awesome to think the wedding is now just days away.

Over the weekend, we watched two really great films. The first was The Gallows, which is a found-footage movie about a school play where one of the actors was accidentally hanged by a prop and then years later the school decide to put the play on again in homage. It’s creepy and very effective.

the gallows

The other was 10 Cloverfield Lane. We really enjoyed Cloverfield and were intrigued to watch this new one, which isn’t a sequel but is in a similar vein to the first. Again a very interesting film, and brilliantly acted. If you liked Cloverfield I recommend it!

10-Cloverfield-Lane

The rest of the week was grey and rainy and so so chilly. It felt like autumn had come back – we even had the heating on! But the forecast for next week is warmer and brighter and just in the nick of time because we’re all heading to St Ives on Friday and Saturday to celebrate Sarah and Nick’s wedding. We all can’t wait!

Before that though, Tash, one of the bridesmaids, lands in the UK after being in Thailand since September last year. I cannot wait to see her! It’s been too long but before we know it she’ll be heading back.

Oh one other fun thing – Gary managed to get us tickets to see Bad Company in October. I love classic rock and can’t wait to see them. We’ve been waiting for a UK tour for a while and finally they announced it! I’m gonna get my rock on!

A List of Good Things (so far!) 2016

This year has started off awesome, with tons of things planned and a good feeling about the year ahead.

With a few things already booked for this year, at the end of last, we’ve topped those off with a few more. No doubt more will happen as we go along, but here’s what I’m excited about so far!:

photo

  • My awesome friend Sarah is getting married in a couple of months, and I’m lucky enough to be one of her bridesmaids! I’m so excited about the lead up to it, the day and also the week after as most of us will be staying around the area for a little holiday!
  • A couple of weeks later Gary’s cousin gets married, so I get a second wedding to go to, this time as a guest.

secretcinema-dirtydancing-a

  • Secret Cinema presents Dirty Dancing in July. After going to their Back to The Future screening we knew we wanted to go to another one, and Dirty Dancing seemed like an amazing choice. Great music, great atmosphere and great movie. We can’t wait!
  • In September Gary and I celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary, and to celebrate this in style we’re heading to Orlando for two weeks of sun, Disney and rollercoasters! I’ve never been, but as a mahooosive Disney and Harry Potter fan I’m beside myself with excitement over the parks. Plus we’ll be extending our summer by visiting at the end of September. And no doubt when we come home British winter will be in full swing…..
  • Speaking of Harry Potter:

harry-potter-and-the-cursed-child-poster-461923

We landed some tickets to this Harry Potter play and managed to get them for THIS YEAR. Getting tickets was crazy hard for some unknown reason….. *eyeroll* So in October we’ll be heading off to London for two plays in one day…. intriguing!

  • Also in October, my Mum and Dad celebrate their ruby wedding anniversary and there’s a party to be had!
  • Guy Fawkes night is extra special this year because earlier in the day we will have visited London for Jurassic Park in Concert at the Royal Albert Hall. We went to a Pixar show at the Royal Albert Hall and also Back to The Future in Concert last year and really enjoyed them both. Gary loves musical score, and we both love the score from Jurassic Park so it’ll be a treat to see it live! We’re hoping that as we’ll be in London anyway there might be a good local fireworks display to visit afterwards!

And that’s it for the year so far. We’d hoped to Hot Dub Time Machine it again, but the only local-ish gig is whilst we’re in Florida, and we wanted to go to V Festival but the line-up is a bit rubbish. Still I reckon we’ve got a good year to come! And who knows what else will pop up along the way 🙂

This Week I Have Been Mostly….

this week i have been mostly

I’ve had a lovely and relaxed time, this past week. On Monday evening I went for dinner with 3 of the Book Club 6. We talked house moving, work, life and the upcoming wedding of one of the bunch. Sarah’s hen was the reason we went to Ibiza last year. We hadn’t seen each other since before Christmas. Life keeps on getting in the way!

My down time has been mostly spent watching Pretty Little Liars, and I have no shame in admitting I’ve managed to watch 5 and a half seasons in just one month. Granted I got a lot seen during my week off when I caught the plague and spent most of it in bed.

image

So I’m all caught up but that means I have to wait until Wednesdays to see the next episodes like the rest of the poor population. I’m loving what they’ve done with the story, and can’t wait to see what’s next!

I’ve been playing around with some of those beauty bits I picked up last weekend, and I’ll do a proper review at some point, but so far I’m loving the mini ‘It’s Potent’ from Benefit. It’s only been a week, and I might be totally wrong, but I’m sure the dark circles under my eyes have reduced. Could this be a miracle cream? I’ve also played around a bit with the colour corrector palette I picked up from Collection at Boots, and so far I’m impressed. The formulas aren’t amazing, but for a £5.99 palette what can you expect? The concept behind them, and how they work on my skin are a big thumbs up so far.

I posted up a review midweek of It Follows, which is a current favourite movie of mine. If you missed the post, check it out. I’d love to hear what you thought of the film if you’ve seen it.

img_4781

We started watching the new Judd Apatow min-series Love, which one episode in, is very intriquing. If you love watching Girls I think you’ll love this, since Judd Apatow is involved with both, they have a similar feel to them. I love his movies so I guessed I’d probably like this too. So far so good!

Gary and I, in our aim to eat healthily, took a visit to Five Guys for dinner on Friday…. We love the burgers there, but came away stinking of grease from sitting in the restaurant. We’d never noticed this problem before, but two days later we’ve noticed the smell is still lingering on our coats when we’ve been bundling up to leave the house. Really nasty – it might help to prevent us going back any time soon, which can only be a help towards our healthy eating plan. Tonight I’m trying out Nigella’s Mexican lasagne, and can’t wait to have it in my belly!

image

Yesterday morning I had the pleasure of a Skype chat with my friend Tash who has been in Vietnam and Thailand since mid September last year. I really miss her so it’s been great to catch up with her, and see her face! She’s hoping to be back in about 3 months, so she can join us as bridesmaid for Sarah’s wedding. In the meantime I’m thankful for Whatsapp and Skype so I can chat with her at the click of a button.

image

We’ve had a couple of snow flurries this week, and a hail storm this afternoon. The weather is so turbulent at the moment, but towards the end of next week we’re hoping to get back to double figures. I’m longing for light jackets and pretty clothes again!

image

Today we saw some half marathon runners, running for the MK Festival of Running. I haven’t run properly since my injury last year, and have been happy to take some time off. I usually gauge how much my subconscious wants to run by how I react when I see other people running. Seeing these guys plodding along completing a half marathon race today made me wish I was there with them. So I’m hoping this is a sign for things to come. When the mornings and evenings are lighter I’d like to begin with short runs around the block again. I hate it when I’m doing it, but love the feeling afterwards. And I need to work off these visits to Five Guys somehow!

This Week I Have Been Mostly….

Here we are almost at the end of February. Where is the time going?

My last few beauty posts have been very well received and I wanted to say hello to all my new followers! It’s lovely to have you here and I can’t wait to speak with you via your comments. Welcome 🙂 Feel free to follow me over on twitter too, if you feel like it! I’m @groggits

The last few weeks have flown by in a whirl of work and play. Last weekend Gary and I took the opportunity to visit a local pub, The Swan at Salford and have a lovely date-night. So we popped on some nice clothes, I brushed my hair, and we headed out. Both of our meals were delicious and I had a yummy cocktail which tasted like there was no alcohol in it (the most dangerous kind…!)

Gary and I took receipt of a new TV we’ve been saving for for a while now – its 50” 4K and 3D. I’d been given a copy of Frozen for my birthday a few years ago, which happened to have the 3D version on it so we were able to really put the TV to the test, and the picture is amazing! We’ve since bought a few 3D blu rays to watch and I must say, Tangled in 3D got me a bit emotional at the end with the lanterns. We’re planning on watching Life of Pi on it soon. So excited! Oh and I can watch YouTube on it too, which is amazing – this might be old hat to some of you, but I’m loving watching my subscribed channels on there! The remote control even has a Netflix button….. woah!

The weather has been swinging between icy hell in the mornings and spring like sunsets in the evenings. I’m getting tired of having to layer up and I’m craving being able to wear some of my prettier clothes with a light jacket. Everyone dresses cuter in milder weather and I think this is the first year I’ve really missed the Summer throughout the whole of Autumn and Winter.

We received a wedding invitation for Gary’s cousin’s wedding in July. It looks like it might be a festival in the woods type theme so I’m thinking along the lines of Midsummer Night’s Dream for my outfit. I adore weddings and really can’t wait!

I spent a little while in Boots this weekend, just mooching and seeing what’s new, and picked up some amazing new things to try.

newbies

I got this little lot for a little over £30 – I can’t wait to try it all out, especially the Collection #concealandlightlikeapro Palette (£5.99!)  Anyone else find it weird calling it Collection and not Collection 2000 or is it just me? I’m also loving that Benefit are doing these £5 minis because it means I can try a few bits out without committing to the size or cost of a full sized product. They have an offer on at the moment for 4 minis for £15 and there’s quite a few lines in the deal. Go have a look! I’m all about hiding my dark circles and fine lines at the moment, so most of the stuff I picked up was the try in that area. Keep an eye out later in March to find out what I thought of these!

And as we’re nearing the end of the month, stay tuned for my February Favourites blog, due to hit your blog reader next week. See you then!

Remembering My Big Day

Today I celebrate my 8 year wedding anniversary. I know what you’re all thinking, how can someone who looks about 26 have been married for so long? Well we got married at the tender age of 23 and I have good genes 🙂  (though I have started to notice a few lines under my eyes… eek!)

I have to be truthful, I don’t really remember much of the day. It goes so fast and I got so swept up in it that before I knew it, the whole thing was over.

I remember thinking it wasn’t fair that Gary couldn’t stay the night in my hotel room the night before, and it seemed mean I had to spend it on my own feeling lonely. I remember curling my hair the night before, like I always had to so the curls would settle whilst I slept, and waking up to poker straight hair. I ended up having to curl it again after breakfast and it didn’t end up half bad.

wedcollage

I remember there being water and tissues in the back of the car taking me to the venue and wondering how many emotional brides had sat where I was sitting.

wedcollage2

And then I was walking down the aisle with my Dad, through an aisle of lavender towards all my family and friends sat in a beautiful garden on a glorious sunny September afternoon.

The day couldn’t have gone better. Friends and family mingled, the weather was perfect and I married my best friend.

wedding6

And then it was done. The wedding breakfast (a 3 meat carvery), the party and the disco. It’s only 2 years until our ten year anniversary and we’re hoping to go to Disneyworld in Florida to celebrate – I’d also love to renew our vows and have a party with friends and family, but who knows if we’ll actually do it. I would honestly love to, though, because I’d like to involve people I know now that I didn’t know then. Who knows, but I still have two glorious years to think about all that.

Ding Dong The Bells Are Gonna Chime!

Once upon a time, not so long ago, Sarah, one of the members of our ‘Book Club’ got engaged! The rest of us girls were all so excited we arranged to meet up a week later to hear all about the proposal and see the ring. She’s the first one in the group to get engaged (two of us are already married) which makes two major life events in the group this year – one of the group is expecting her first baby in November.

We met up at a local pub, ordered drinks and food and chatted about the proposal, plans for the wedding and generally got very excited about the upcoming event. I think we probably overwhelmed Sarah with our questions. Having already gotten engaged and being married for almost 8 years, I have been to a few weddings and planned my own so know all the things you have to think about. Much to my annoyance, when I was planning my wedding Pinterest didn’t exist. At a young 23 years old, I didn’t really put a huge deal of thought into it, and that was probably for the best as we were on a tight budget. But if I could do it all again I would. There are so many details I’d love to change and add. It’s so exciting that Sarah has all of this ahead of her.

All of us were über excited and after we’d eaten we went outside, minus one of the group who’d had to leave for a late shift at her job, and took a some photos of Sarah and the beautiful ring she now has on her hand.

The coming months are going to be tremendously exciting with a baby and a wedding. Growing up is amazing and I’m so pleased I get to do it with this lovely bunch of ladies!

Work Hard, Play Hard

Hello! I’m still here! I know I haven’t written a proper post in a little while. I’ve been so busy and tired out with stuff that I haven’t found the time to blog. Sad 😦

Work’s a bit hectic at the moment – working odd shifts and then having to find the time to run let alone blog.

Running took a downturn since my knee injury. I have, however, bought a Mueller knee strap and since it arrived I’ve run with it twice and had NO knee pain. It’s a miracle piece of kit! Training for the 5k was taking a nose dive because I was having to take so many rest days I was starting from scratch each time I ran. But today I added an additional half mile onto my training and felt good. I’m so excited that I should be back on track within the week!

Gary came running with me twice last week, which was amazing since he hasn’t been able to do any exercise, due to health issues, for many years. He thinks he’ll be able to start running with me again soon.

Also, I have recently discovered Vine – yes I’m slow on the uptake. If you’re on there please find me and add me (I’m Groggits!)

https://vine.co/v/blbeBpPUeJU

(That’s my first vine video!)

Last night Gary and I went to the wedding reception of one of my ex work friends. We had an amazing night catching up with friends and having fun. It was so nice to see everyone together again!

1006163_10152884663365456_839292182_n

We had great fun singing and dancing to some very cheesy tunes and generally acting a bit stupid – that’s what it’s all about! This morning my throat hurt and I could have done with an extra 4 hours sleep on top of what I got – but I had to work so I had to man-up and get on with it. (And I still managed to run this evening!)

So that’s just a quick catch up of what’s been going on. There’ll be more soon – promise! 😀
